Top 10 Tuesday: Hidden Gems Read In The Past Year

Hey Guys! It's Tuesday so you know that means another post for Top 10 Tuesday hosted by the ladies over at the Broke and the Bookish. This weeks theme was to pick out top 10 hidden gems that we have read in the last year or so. I have quite a few, but some way I was able to narrow it down to 10. Keep reading so you learn of some books that you may enjoy! Books with reviews will have a link posted next to them. 

Spelled (review) was a random book I found in 2015 after look for some type of re-tellings to get into. I haven't heard much about this book since I've read it, but it definitely was amazing and is worth checking out. Stepping to A New Day (review). Okay so this is one that I received for review and did not realize it was the seventh book in the series; however, it was amazing and it made me want to read the rest of the series. If you haven't checked out anything by Beverly Jenkins I would recommend checking this out soon. Chronicle of a Death Foretold (review). I wouldn't have picked this one up, but it was recommended to me and boy oh boy was it worth the read. It's complex and makes you question so much as reader. If you're look to start one of Marquez's works, but find things intimidating then I would recommend starting here.

Saving Kabul Corner. I would have never picked this book up; however, it was listed as a nominee for the SC Book Awards and I'm glad I did. It has so much information regarding the cultural practices of Afghanistan. It's a middle grade novel so it definitely is a great book for children. The Woods. If you're looking for a weird, creepy science-fiction comic book series I would definitely recommend this. I picked it up randomly from my local library and I'm glad I did. Choices. Last year I started reading more urban fiction and I found this series which isn't just urban fiction, but also lesbian fiction. It was my first time reading something like this and I loved it!

Paper Things. This is another SC Book Award Nominee and I loved it because it dealt with the difficult topic of homelessness in young adults. It was beautifully written and I'm definitely glad I picked it up. Masterminds. I thought I was done with dystopians until I picked this book up. Aya. This is such a wonderful graphic novel series that takes place in Africa and does a wonderful job showing a different side of Africa then what the media typically shows us.

Snowflower & The Secret Fan (review). I read this one back in December and completely loved it. It teaches a lot about Chinese culture and the foot binding process. I really enjoyed it and I look forward to reading more from this author soon.
