Enter the Magician's Apprentice Her name is Chise Hatori, a penniless orphan troubled by visions. Sold as a slave to an inhuman mage, she is about to begin a strange new life, filled with magic, fairies, and other beings of a fantastical nature.

While I don’t often express it on here, I’m a huge fan of manga and I’m always looking for new titles to check out. I found this title a while ago through the anime and was really intrigued by the premise so I was excited to pick up the manga. The manga definitely isn’t what I typically read which usually consists of shojo. This is easily classified as dark, fantasy shonen. For some reason, it instantly pulled me in and I was in love with the story. Chise is extremely adorable even though she’s had such a horrible life. Readers don’t necessarily get the full insight to what happened to her but there is some alluding to a suicide. I adore how Elias has taken Chise under his wing. While his overall intention is to marry her, it seems as though he’s attempting to make her feel comfortable and at home first. The magic system seems to also be complex. There is a stark difference between mages and alchemist. While mages are able to actually use magic, alchemist are identified as individuals who simply manipulate elements. This is important to the context of the story and the people who Chise meets. I also like that the exploration between religion and magic is briefly explored. It is a member of the religious community that sends Chise and Elias on their journey together to figure out an imbalance that’s been occurring in the magical community. This is a manga that seems as though it’s going to cover some difficult topics, but at the same time I feel as though it will touch a lot on forgiveness, love, and friendship. I’m excited to continue to delve into this series.
