Series: The Grishaverse #1
# of Pages: 358
Publication: June 5th, 2012
Source: Purchased Copy
Genre: YA Fantasy
Amazon | Goodreads | Book Depository

Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee. Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling. Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha . . . and the secrets of her heart. Shadow and Bone is the first installment in Leigh Bardugo's Grisha Trilogy.

So this week I'm reading a book that I have to finish for my young adult materials class. I'm really excited about it because it's already been fast paced and engaging. I'm hoping to finish it soon and I hope that I can go ahead and move on to the next couple of books.

"I considered refusing, but what was the point? I shrugged awkwardly out of my coat and let the Healer ease my shirt over my shoulders. The Corporalki were the Order of the Living and the Dead. I tried to focus on the living part, but I'd never been healed by a Grisha and every muscle in my body tensed with fear."

Happy Reading

So this week I decided to choose an excerpt from Scarlet which is the second book of the Lunar Chronicles. Yes, I am extremely late in jumping on the bandwagon associated with this series; however, I usually have a tendency to start a series once all the hype of the novel has calmed down. Keep reading to see the quote I have chosen for this week's Friday 56.

"Twice she stopped to listen, thinking she heard footsteps somewhere below. Would there be a alarm when their escape was discovered?"

I cannot wait to finish this book. I liked Cinder, but I'm really liking the addition of Scarlet to this book. She adds a certain level of fierceness that I cannot get over.

Synopsis:

Cinder, the cyborg mechanic, returns in the second thrilling installment of the bestselling Lunar Chronicles. She is trying to break out of prison--even though if she succeeds, she'll be the Commonwealth's most wanted fugitive.

Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit's grandmother is missing. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information about her grandmother's whereabouts, she is loath to trust this stranger, but s inexplicably drawn to him, and he to her. As Scarlet and Wolf unravel one mystery, they encounter another when they meet Cinder. Now, all of them must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen Levana, who will do anything for the handsome Prince Kai to become her husband, her king, her prisoner.

Happy Reading

So I decided to do my Friday #56 a little differently and post a picture instead of a sentence because I'm reading a graphic novel. I thought this would give readers a better insight to what I'm seeing as I read the 4th volume of Fables.

pg. 56 in Fables Vol 4

This is the 4th volume of the Fables collection of comics. I started reading the comic series this summer and I haven't been able to stop reading it since then. I was lucky enough to find several of the volumes on sale at a second hand bookstore. I hope to finish this collection by the end of this weekend! :)

Synopsis

For centuries the Fables have watched the gateways between our mundane world and their lost magical homelands, ever on guard for signs of invasion. Now, after decades of quiet, it seems that someone has finally escaped the Adversary's oppression and made it to sanctuary. But appearances, as always, can be deceiving, and there's plenty about this refugee's story that smells wrong too the right noses. In fact, things are even worse than they suspect--plans are already under way for the complete destruction of Fabletown, and every one of its citizens is about to get a refresher course in the unforgiving lessons of war.

Happy Reading

"She ignored his meaningful tone as she reached back for another arrow. After she fitted it into position on the sinewed bowstring, her eyes darted to his face."

I'm loving this book. The power behind the main character Shahrzad is amazing. She has an energy about her that is truly captivating. I'm about halfway through the book now so I plan on finishing it this weekend sometime. Look for a review soon.

Synopsis

In a land ruled by a murderous boy-king, each dawn brings heartache to a new family. Khalid, eighteen-year-old Caliph of Khorasan, is a monster. Each night he takes a new bride only to have a silk cord wrapped around her throat come morning. When sixteen-year-old Shahrzad's dearest friend falls victim to Khalid, Shahrzad vows vengeance and volunteers to be his next bride. Shahrzad is determined not only to stay alive, but to end the caliph's reign of terror once and for all.

Night after night, Shahrzad beguiles Khalid, weaving stories that enchant, ensuring her survival, though she knows each dawn could be her last. But something she never expected begins to happen: Khalid is nothing like she imagined him to be. This monster is a boy with a tormented heart. Incredibly, Shahrzad finds herself falling in love. How is this possible? It's an unforgivable betrayal. Still, Shahrzad has come to understand all is not as it seems in this place of marble and stone. She resolves uncover whatever secrets lurk and, despite her love, be ready to take Khalid's life as retribution for the many lives he's stolen. Can their love survive this world of stories and secrets?

Inspired by A Thousand and One Nights, The Wrath and the Dawn is a sumptuous and enthralling read from beginning to end.

Happy Reading!

"Most half's had no idea what is was like. Sure, they mingled in the outside world -- mingled being the key word--but they were never part of it , not for any amount of time."

I'm liking this book so far because it gives an interesting take to the concept of Greek mythology. This quote really captures how the half-bloods do not fit in in their own world or the mortal world. I hope to finish this book by the either this evening or tomorrow morning.

Synopsis:

The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, ad the children of two hematoi---pure-bloods--have godlike powers. Children of hematoi and mortals--well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of pures.

Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets. But she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:

Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden.

Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the covenant and become a sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon and being hunted by Aiden.

And that would kind of suck.

#FridayReads 6.26.15

TGIF!!! So this weekend is going to be pretty busy for me. I'm headed to Charlotte tomorrow to spend the day with some friends and go thrifting (I'll definitely be looking for some cheap reads!). As a result I'm not sure how much reading I'll actually get finished, but here is a look at what I plan to read this weekend:

 Published: 2013

# of Pages: 500

Goodreads Blurb: "Audrey Niffenegger's dazzling debut is the story of Clare, a beautiful, strong-minded art student, and Henry, an adventuresome librarian, who have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six, and were married when Clare was twenty-three and Henry thirty-one. Impossible, but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: his genetic clock randomly resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past, and future. His disappearances are spontaneous and unpredictable, and lend a spectacular urgency to Clare and Henry's unconventional love story. That their attempt to live normal lives together is threatened by something they can neither prevent nor control makes their story intensely moving and entirely unforgettable."

My Comments:

This book has been sitting on my bookshelf for a while so I thought it was time to pick it up. I have seen the movie, but I'm really excited to be reading the book!

Published: 2004

# of Pages: 435

Goodreads Blurb: "Harry Potter is lucky to reach the age of thirteen, since he has already survived the murderous attacks of the feared Dark Lord on more than one occasion. But his hopes for a quiet term concentrating on Quidditch are dashed when a maniacal mass-murderer escapes from Azkaban, pursued by the soul-sucking Dementors who guard the prison. It's assumed that Hogwarts is the safest place for Harry to be. But is it a coincidence that he can feel eyes watching him in the dark, and should he be taking Professor Trelawney's ghoulish predictions seriously?"

My Comments:

Of course I'm excited to read this book this weekend! I've been attempting to re-read all the Harry Potter books before the year is over so this was the next in line. Re-reading this has been like reliving a part of my childhood. And it makes me even more excited for the illustrated versions to start coming out this fall.

What books will you be reading this weekend?
