In the third book in the critically acclaimed middle-grade series about mystery-solving siblings, Moxie McCoy, fourth grade detective, goes undercover. Moxie joins the Wonder Scouts to investigate a suspected saboteur in the badge competition. She’s never liked the Wonder Scouts, but once she joins the group, Moxie becomes enchanted with earning badges herself! Meanwhile, someone has broken into Tiddlywhump’s Local House of History, and it’s up to Moxie’s little brother, Milton, to begin his own investigation. Can this irrepressible detective duo crack two different cases? Richly illustrated and laugh-out-loud funny Matthew Swanson and Robbi Behr’s Wonder Undercover is a must-have for young readers. The Real McCoys is a dynamic and intriguing middle grade series that focuses on a brother sister duo that solve "crimes" that have occurred around their school and neighborhood. While I'm still continuing my read of the series, I have found the books to be funny and entertaining. Each page contains hand-drawn artwork related to the series. These books also prove to be great transitional reads for reluctant readers and those that are having a difficult time adjusting to books that just contain text. The artwork is incorporated in a way that it effectively becomes part of the story and not just a random add on from the author. In terms of character development, I found Moxie to be a bit obnoxious, but also charming. She can come across as a know it all, but she learns to concede to other peoples thoughts and feelings when it's necessary. I absolutely adored her brother Milton. He is the balance to Moxie's character through his reserved and shy nature. He definitely serves as the brains behind each mission helping put the pieces of the mystery together father quickly. Another aspect of these novels worth noting is the complexity of some vocabulary words which Moxie always defines incorrectly. While these can be daunting for a younger reader at first, they are great ways to introduce new words and a glossary is provided in the back of the book for further reference. Each plot of the three books focuses on a different mystery. Surprisingly, I found it difficult to figure out the mysteries as an adult reader which is amazing. I think that younger readers will have the time of their lives trying to figure out the "culprit" in each book. I will be doing a more in-depth review of each book sometime in the next couple of weeks; however, I definitely would recommend checking these out for readers that are interested in middle grade mystery as well as readers that are  interested in graphic novels since these books have such complex artwork.
