Top 10 Tuesday: Historical Settings
Bloggers & fellow readers! It is Tuesday so you know that means we are up for another Top Ten Tuesday hosted by The Broke and The Bookish. This week's theme is to either discuss your favorite historical setting or those you would like to see more of and/or your favorite futuristic setting or those you would like to see more of. I decided to go with my top 10 favorite historical settings. Let me know some of your favorites in the comment box below!
- Ancient Greece: This time in history is filled with so many unique attributes from individuals to architecture to customs. I love when an author can incorporate the history of Ancient Rome into their writing.
- Ancient Egypt: I solely chose this one because of the history of ancient gods and individuals like Cleopatra and King Tut.
- Tudor England: King Henry the VIII has to be one of the most fascinating historical figures in English History. His weakness for women is simply captivating.
- Ancient Africa: Africa is often depicted has a poor continent in dire need, but I love when writers focus on the rich history of Africa; the time when it was ruled by kings and queens.
- Colonial America: Okay so don't ask my why, but for some reason I absolutely love colonial history in America. It's just something about it that I found extremely intriguing. Living in South Carolina has given me the opportunity to see a lot historical aspects of this time period.
- Ancient China: I find the dynasty's of Chinese history to be particularly interesting especially any type of literature that focuses on or takes a look at the custom of foot-binding.
- 19th Century Japan: I'm very specific about this time period because it chronicles the height of the Geisha tradition. If you have ever read Memoirs of a Geisha you will completely understand my fascination with this cultural tradition.
- Civil Rights-Era: Need I say more? This time in history is filled with so much rich information that I hardly am capable of staying away from an author that utilizes this as a backdrop to their novel.
- 1920's America: One of my most favorite times in history! The roaring 20's. Novels like The Great Gatsby & The Diviners have brought me to absolutely love this historical setting.
- The Victorian Era: Last, but definitely not least this era of history has me sold just on clothing alone. I mean we're talking about a time that included authors like Dickens, the Bronte sisters, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Appreciation is especially awarded to authors who have a setting in the Victorian Era that specially focuses on a particular boarding school.
I love this list!!! Can you recommend some good books on Ancient Rome, Greece, and Egypt please? I am always look and there are so few!
ReplyDeleteYea of course! Rick Riordan is probably the best when it comes to those three ancient periods, but there is another author by the name of Michelle Moran who is great for writing historical fiction about Egypt.
DeleteI'm also fascinated by Colonial and Civil War-era American history. Such exciting times but also so scary and conflict-filled.
ReplyDeleteHappy TTT!
Definitely scary!!
DeleteAncient Greece and Tudor England are two of my favourite time periods too!

ReplyDeleteGlad you like as much as I do!
DeleteI'd definitely like to see more YA books set in ancient Egpyt. The roaring 20s are my jam, I love the era (hair, clothes, makeup) and need to find more novels that take place in it. Nice list!
ReplyDeleteI agree! The only know about Rick Riordan's series and a lot of people don't even talk about that.
DeleteI have a hard time getting into books that have historical settings but I really enjoyed The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare and the Victorianesque setting in it! great post this week!

DeleteGreat list! I low that you have a mix of time periods. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your colonial history love @ My TTT
ReplyDeleteOf course!! Thank you so much.
DeleteYou've got so much cool sounding time periods here. And so many that I've, depressingly enough, never read anything from. I do deeply love Ancient Egypt. Everything about it fascinates me. Beyond that, Victorian Era and Colonial America are two that I've read a bit from and quite enjoy. The rest of them though, I am woefully under read on. (Though I do love the idea especially of Ancient Greece.)
ReplyDeleteDefinitely check some of them out if you ever get the chance. I'm sure you will enjoy them. ;)
DeleteI've seen Tudor England on a few people's lists, but you have some settings that I hadn't even thought of, like ancient China and Ancient Africa, both of which would offer some amazing stories! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteDena @ Batch of Books
I'm glad you liked them! I just thought it would be great to share them everyone else.
DeleteSome of these are my favorite eras too!
ReplyDeleteI'd like to read more ancient civilizations, but as high fantasy, not historical fiction.
ohh that's cool! I don't think I have read any high fantasy books with these specific eras. ;)
Delete1920s, Victorian and Tudors all sound great! I watched The Tudors (or MOST of it) when it was on, so finding books in that era sounds fun. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for visiting Dreaming Under the Same Moon and for the blog follow. :)
No thank you!! I really like your blog! :)
DeleteI haven't read Memoirs of a Geisha but I reeeally really want to!! And YES to Ancient China and also I love Imperial Russia and anything Japan. XD And also I'm totally with you on Ancient Egypt. Some of my favourite childhood books were set there and I LOVE THEM SO MUCH.
