In this latest entry in the acclaimed, bestselling mystery series, Maisie Dobbs takes on her most personal case yet, a twisting investigation that will take her across London, from her childhood neighborhood to the highest echelons of power.
I honestly didn't know about this series before joining in for the blog tour. I heard bout the series from working with a few people at my job, but I never took the initiative to actually read one of the books. Before signing on to the tour, I made sure you didn't have to read the series in order to enjoy each book which according to the author isn't necessary. With this being the 9th in the series, I was still able to join in and understand all of the elements associated with the Maisie Dobbs series. There are a few things that I would like to address and discuss in regards to this book.
First, the setting was enjoyable. I am a hug fan of historical fiction and anything that takes place in the distant past usually captures and captivates my attention. Jacqueline Winspear writes in a way that definitely transports the reader into the every day life of those that are living in pre-World War II Europe. To be honest this was probably the part of the novel that kept me the most engaged. The every day activities of the people in the book in relation to their setting was intriguing and really pushed my curiosity for the time of history.
Another aspect of the book that I really enjoyed was the writing. Winspear writes with such a natural flow and ease when describing and illustrating her characters. Her writing captures the reader and transports them into the very essence of the mystery. Nevertheless, the one thing that I couldn't really get into were the characters specifically the main character of Maisie. I don't know what she may have been like in previous novels; however, in this one she came across as difficult and condescending. I was enjoying her in the beginning; however, the more that I was absorbed into the story and the mystery the more I found myself telling her that she could calm down and not be so aggressive and condescending. For this particular reason, it was difficult for me to make it through the last few parts of the book.
If you are looking for a good historical mystery I would recommend this book. I want to know more and understand the character of Maisie a little bit more so I will probably go back to the beginning and read more of the series.
